Best trade may be the one that looked worst:

Erik Karlsson for a top 3 pick in one of the deepest drafts in NHL history + Josh Norris + 3rd for Dylan Demelo + Chris Tierney.....

also that 11m cap hit is not there for another 7 years

The Matt duchene effect: His new team becomes worst and the GM that traded him away becomes one of the best.

Not really a fair poll between these two trades. Give up a bundle for a rental who didn’t stick around vs trade a rental playing “above his ceiling” for 1st 2nd and 3rd. Didn’t have to vote to know the results.

It's not really supposed to be fair. It's a 32-trade bracket.

man, with the power of hindsight, that was probably Dorion's worst trade. unless he only made 32 trades, that one shouldn't ever be in the "best trades' bracket.

Don't jinx it...

I've voiced my concerns on here before.

Picks 5 & 6 is the only situation where I would be VERY pissed. But for this to happen ALL 3 spots would have to go to teams outside the top 3 (ottawa pick, DET pick, and ottawa pick). I'll knock on wood everytime

Tankathon starting odds show an accumulative 122% probability that one of Detroit, Ottawa and Ottawa (San Jose) will draw a top 3 pick.

However, after each draw they rejig the lottery weights. Therefore, it is entirely possible that the Detroit, Ottawa and Ottawa (San Jose) picks could be shut out and the Ottawa picks could slide to the 5 and 6 position.

I can't do the math but several tables I have read suggest that the highest probable outcome is for Ottawa to pick 4 and 5. I could be happy with that result.

I'm more concerned we see a completely different draft lottery if hte playoffs are shut out completely.

Yeah, I'm shocked that's down as one of the best. Maybe for Colorado.... but I thought it was completely INSANE of Dorion. Ironically, Duchene was pretty productive in Ottawa but you knew they were going to end up with Richard.

I believe what Michael states is that it is the lowest rated trade of all trades which qualify for consideration. At no point was it stated that it was a good trade.

Yeah it's not a good trade

The seeding isn't in order of whether I think trades are good or bad, but of the 40 trades he's made I didn't want to take out major trades like this one. But, to your point, there is certainly a number of bad trades we'll see in this exercise...

While the Demelo and Namestnikov deals were a little lower than desired, Dorion did great in the Pageau trade. It puts his trade record for the year as a success.

It just shows that if you get the big things right, the smaller items are not of great consequence.

Duchene was very productive in Ottawa considering the circumstances. There were other issues on the team that he couldn’t fix. He was simply an upgrade on Turris.

The pieces given up outside of Turris are meh. Hammond even pro anymore? Bowers is a middling prospect if I have ever seen one. Wild card is Bowen Byram who was picked at #4. He could be a very well-rounded d-man or could easily end up being a 5/6 pairing guy. And 3rd round picks are thrown around all the time.

I still don’t think the trade is as bad as people made it out to be. Where Dorion failed was his evaluation of the team after somewhat of a miracle run to the conference final. Which I guess always takes into account when assessing the trade.

The Pageau deal is an easy win as the deal just made sense in the team’s current situation and a 1st rounder was gravy. What is baffling is the amount of people that felt he should be retained.

to be fair to Michael, at the time the trade was made pretty much everyone said it was a win for Ottawa. I don't think anyone expected that pick would end up being even a top 10 pick, let alone the #4.

obviously, in hindsight, the trade looks awful.......but only in hindsight
